Chapter History
A legacy rooted in brotherhood, scholarship, leadership, and service from Cornell University to Winston-Salem State University.
The Legacy of Alpha Phi Alpha & Beta Iota
Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men, was founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Seven college men recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country and created a legacy that continues to lead, serve, and uplift communities.
On April 28, 1951, the Beta Iota Chapter was chartered on the campus of Winston-Salem State University by 11 young men who helped establish a lasting chapter presence built on excellence, service, and leadership.

A Voteless People is a Hopeless People
“A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930s when many African Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment through town meetings and candidate forums.
